The oldest temple in Tokyo, Sensoji, sometimes called Asakusa Kwannon, is a Buddhist temple originating from the 7th century. During festivals, of which there are several throughout the year, the surrounding streets are closed to vehicle traffic to allow large crowds to mingle and celebrate. Kaminari-mon, the outer gate with a giant red lantern, is a symbol of Asakusa. Follow the street, where you will find many souvenir shops as well as vendors serving traditional Japanese fare, to the second gate, or Hozomon. This shopping zone is itself many centuries old. Inside the Hozomon gate stands the main temple and a five-storied pagoda. Highly visited by tourists and locals, you will enjoy the history and sampling of native culture that you find here.
